In 1913, two neighboring towns, Winston and Salem, conjoined to create the city of Winston-Salem in North Carolina. Located midway between the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Winston-Salem has a humid subtropical climate. The city was the founding site of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1875, which is famous for its product brands such as Camel cigarettes and Prince Albert pipe tobacco. Winston-Salem is still the primary manufacturing center for this tobacco company.

Krispy Kreme was also founded in Winston-Salem. In 1937, Krispy Kreme opened its first store on South Main St. The Hanes brothers also founded their individual textile corporations in Winston-Salem in the early 1900's, which then later merged to become the Hanesbrand known today. Despite these various industries, the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is the largest employer of the city, and health care and social assistance is currently the largest industry in the city.

The first art council in the United States was created in Winston-Salem in 1949. This, combined with the large number of art institutions, gave the city the nickname "City of Arts." A few of the fine arts establishments in the city include the Twin City Stage, Winston-Salem Theater Alliance, the Piedmont Opera Theater, the Stevens Center for the Performing Arts, the Winston-Salem Symphony, and numerous art galleries.

Winston-Salem is the most religious city in North Carolina, with over 50% of the population reported being religiously affiliated. Christianity is the most prominent religion, with Baptists being the largest religious group in the city. There are also several colleges and universities within Winston-Salem, including Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and Salem College.
